By far the most common hummingbird seen east of the Mississippi River, the ruby-throated hummingbird measures about three inches long and average 3.4 grams in weight (about a tenth of an ounce). Males have the red throat patch; females have green, black and white bands. This species winters in Mexico, Central America and Southern Florida.
