During the summer of 1999, some 300 flamboyant fiberglass cows descended upon Chicago, bedecked in everything from gum drops to gold leaf to colorful paint patterns, CowsParade© generated boundless enthusiasm, extraordinary tourism, millions of dollars, innumerable imitation exhibitions, and endless bovine puns. After the show was over, which lasted many months, most cows were auctioned off and the money went to the charity of the sponsor’s choice.
The concept was brought to the United States when businessman Peter Hanig from Chicago along with Commissioner of Cultural Affairs, Lois Weisberg organized an event - in Chicago in 1999.
Now, twenty years after being put out to pasture, some of the cows are returning to the public eye to celebrate the anniversary of the original initiative.
This time around, the Magnificent Mile Association is putting all the cows in the same place, in Jane Byrne Park at Michigan and Chicago Avenues, by the historic Water Tower. A few of the cows have remained on public display over the years.
During the Summer, 2022, 3Dstereo photographed some of the famous cows around the city still displaying themselves. Of interest was the pair of bovines on the roof top from our hotel room.

CowParade was a public art exhibit that had been featured in major world cities. Fiberglass sculptures of cows were decorated by local artists, and distributed over the city center, in public places such as train stations, important avenues, and parks. They often feature artwork and designs specific to local culture, as well as city life and other relevant themes.
