Naturally occurring only in limited groves along the western slopes of
the sierra Nevada, giant sequoias are the world's largest living things
and among the oldest. Their average height of 165 to 289 feet and
diameter of 20 or 25 feet make sequoia larger than their close cousins,
the coast redwoods. Based on ring count, the oldest sequoia is about
3,600 years old.
