Formed about 760,000 years ago in the landlocked Mono Basin, Mono Lake has no outlet to the ocean. Evaporation has concentrated 280 million tons of salt in the lake water, resulting in salinity levels more than twice that found in the world's oceans. Important for migratory birds, the lake has an estimated 5 trillion brine shrimp during summer months. Water diversion by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power lowered lake levels, but Court decisions have reduced diversions, so the lake is slowly returning to higher water levels.
